Episode 3 of The Last of Us season 2 quietly hinted at Dina's main secret: what is the character hiding?
Attention, there are serious spoilers for the second season of The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II!
The third episode of HBO's hit series The Last of Us dropped an important clue about Dinah's condition for viewers who are not familiar with the original game. During their journey to Seattle, where Ellie and Dina are trying to find Abby and her group from WLF, an event happened that can explain a lot to attentive viewers.
Here's What We Know
After a brief stop at Joel's grave, the girls embark on a long and dangerous journey to the city. On the way, they come across several dead bodies, including the body of a young girl. It becomes obvious that these are the same seraphs we saw earlier in the episode. The gruesome discovery makes Dina feel nauseous, and even Ellie is shocked by what she sees, especially the bodies of the father and daughter. However, vigilant fans of the game might have noticed something more.
The fact is that Dina's nausea could have another, deeper reason: in the game, she is pregnant. Think about it: Ellie and Dina have already seen a lot of horrible things on their patrols. In the first episode, they came across a gutted bear and the remains of several infected people, and they usually move fearlessly through dangerous terrain.
Do you really think that Dina has never seen a dead body before? Has she never smelt the stench of rotting flesh? Of course, seeing a dead girl in the woods is horrifying, but is it enough to make a hardened and intelligent young girl like Dina, who grew up in a dangerous country where death is a common occurrence, feel nauseous?
She even says to Ellie: "I'm sorry. This has never happened before. I think it's the smell." Dina also shows particular concern about the idea that Abby (or anyone else) might harm the children.
If the series follows the plot of The Last of Us Part 2, Ellie will find out about Dina's pregnancy by the end of the second season. For those who have played the game, it will not come as a surprise that the father of the child is Jesse. How this will affect her relationship with Ellie and the events of the second season is anyone's guess.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Isabela Merced, who plays Dina, intrigued the audience:
"I think Dina has a darker side. This humour kind of masks her darker side, which will eventually be revealed and shown in moments of vulnerability with Ellie. But, you know, this relationship has to be built. Yes, they're best friends, but it's also the first time the audience sees that, so you have to be careful. A lot of Dina depends on who Ellie is and how they are together. There's Dina, there's Ellie, and there's 'Dellie' (their duo)."
Now we wait for the premiere of episode 4 on 4 May.
