The Royal Norwegian Air Force has adopted the JSM multi-purpose cruise missile, designed specifically for fifth-generation fighters, for the first time.
Here's What We Know
The Norwegian Ministry of Defence has announced the delivery of the first Joint Strike Missile (JSM) developed by Kongsberg as part of the Joint Strike Fighter programme. It is intended for use on the F-35A. In short, Norway has 52 such aircraft.
According to Defence Minister Tore Sandvik, this is an example of effective cooperation between the defence sector and national industry.
The JSM is capable of engaging both land and surface targets, just like its shipboard counterpart, the NSM. The range is up to 555 km, depending on the version selected, and the warhead weighs 120 kg. The missile has a length of 4 m and a diameter of 480 mm, which allows it to be placed inside the F-35 fuselage.
The JSM missile has become the main anti-ship weapon for all F-35 modifications and a complement to the LRASM for F/A-18 Super Hornet fighters. The United States plans to gradually integrate the JSM into naval aviation weapons, in particular as a replacement for Harpoon missiles.
