Epic Games won't remove artwork in Fortnite mini-games created by artificial intelligence, as it's getting harder to detect it

It seems that the era of artificially generated Fortnite mini-game covers is here, and Epic Games has no plans to stop it. The company has officially stated that it will not control the quality and origin of the "AI smear" used to create previews of third-party mini-games in Fortnite, arguing that "it will likely become impossible to control" as AI images become increasingly difficult to distinguish from human-made artwork.

Here's What We Know

This statement comes as the number of AI-generated images used to present user-generated content in Fortnite is growing. In an interview with Mustard Plays, Epic Games executives stressed that the company's priority is to ensure that these covers comply with their rules. At the same time, they stressed that Epic will not use AI in its own Fortnite modes, and Executive Vice President Sax Persson noted that the "best results" are still achieved through the work of artists, not artificial intelligence.

"From our perspective, when it comes to cover moderation, we don't really care what tool you use to create them," said Dan Walsh, Director of Product Management. I think that to some extent, AI will become increasingly difficult to detect. It will not stand out as something unique, it will just be another tool that people use to create things. So trying to look for that will become increasingly difficult, to the point where it will probably become impossible to control. We're really only focused on one thing - does this asset meet our rules, yes or no? rather than what tool you used to create it."

Regarding Epic's own use of AI, Persson said: "We have always been supportive of new technologies, but with an ethical stance on the source, for example, when we generate something, it has to be clear and properly licensed. So in that respect, we rely on what we provide to people directly to be the best tools we can make with human effort, but ethical principles are good ownership."

So this is another reminder that the AI era is here and it will be very difficult to do anything about it.
