Greek authorities detained a 59-year-old Georgian citizen on suspicion of spying for Russia. The man collected data on the movement of Western military aid to Ukraine.

Here's What We Know

The spy was arrested in the city of Alexandroupoli, where he had lived for a long time and worked as a painter. According to the investigation, he was recruited in early autumn 2024 by a fellow countryman associated with the Russian GRU.

The detainee's mobile phone contained numerous photos of military facilities and vehicles delivering weapons and equipment to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He sent all these materials to his curator, and during the interrogation, he stated that he was ready to "help his homeland for any amount of money".

His recruiter, according to the investigation, was an ethnic Georgian previously arrested in Lithuania, who had been spying for Russia himself. The Greek authorities emphasise that pro-Russian sentiment among some ethnic communities played a key role in the suspect's motivation.

At the same time, the United States concluded an investigation against former Army intelligence analyst Corbin Schultz. He was sentenced to seven years in prison for passing dozens of classified documents relating to, among other things, the war in Ukraine, satellite systems, and missile defence. From May 2022 to March 2024, he passed the data to a Chinese contact in exchange for $42,000.
