Xiaomi has dropped the SU7 Ultra's power limit after outrage from electric sedan owners
Xiaomi has cancelled a software update that limited the full power output of its flagship SU7 Ultra electric sedan. This came amid a wave of negative reactions from the company's customers in China.
Here's What We Know
Last week, Xiaomi released software version 1.7.0 for the SU7 Ultra with the maximum powertrain output restriction at 900bhp, although the full output of the three-motor powertrain is up to 1,548bhp. The restriction could be lifted if the driver proved a sufficient level of fitness. To do so, it was necessary to show the recommended lap time in qualifying mode on an official race track.
This decision by Xiaomi was aimed at preventing accidents among beginners who are not ready to drive an extremely powerful electric car.
However, the restrictions have caused discontent among owners of cars priced from 529,900 yuan (approximately $73,000). A debate erupted on online forums and social media, with some users arguing that they should have unlimited access to the advertised features of the car, while others supported a safety-focused approach.
The first category of commentators won out. Faced with mounting pressure, Xiaomi eventually cancelled the performance cap. Along with this, the company noted the need for more transparent communication about future software updates. "We appreciate the passionate feedback from our community and will provide more transparency in the future," a company spokesperson said.
