The deal will also include simulators and logistical support. The deliveries will last up to eight years and are part of the priority rearmament programme for the Romanian Army.

As of today, Romania is implementing more than 70 key army modernisation projects, 27 of which already have contracts in place. Most of them are aimed at the Army and include the purchase of armoured personnel carriers, tactical vehicles, artillery systems and multipurpose equipment.

At BSDA 2024, leading international companies such as Hanwha Aerospace, Rheinmetall, BAE Systems and General Dynamics European Land Systems offered their versions of IFVs for the Romanian programme. The proposed models include Redback, KF41 Lynx, CV90 and ASCOD 2.

Romania is working separately to develop its own defence production. In cooperation with Turkey, a joint venture has been established between Otokar Land Systems SRL and Automecanica S.A., with each party holding a 50% stake. The plant will produce 1,059 COBRA II 4×4 armoured vehicles. The agreement also includes technology transfer, engineering, maintenance and marketing.
