IN DOOM: The Dark Ages has redesigned the Glory Kill system, making killing demons more unique and with a sense of greater freedom
DOOM: The Dark Ages not only returns players to the origins of the legendary series, but also radically changes the combat system. The game will reveal the story of Doomslayer before the events of DOOM (2016), and along with the new setting, it will bring a completely different rhythm of combat, a new Glory Kill system, and a whole arsenal of medieval weapons.
Here's What We Know
IN DOOM: The Dark Ages, the developers are focusing on more "heavy" gameplay. If in DOOM Eternal the player felt like a jet fighter, now the hero is a real tank on the battlefield: movements have become more massive, jumps are heavier, and the verticality of the levels has decreased. The main message of the new gameplay is "Stand and Fight": instead of acrobatic manoeuvres, the player is more focused on melee and parrying, and the new shield not only protects but also helps to move around the map and dismember demons.
One of the most notable changes is the completely redesigned Glory Kill system. Now the animations are not synchronised: the player can perform the kill from any angle, smoothly moving from one enemy to another without pauses. This makes the battles more dynamic and each Glory Kill unique, as the system selects animations depending on the weapon used and the type of enemy. The main goal is to avoid repetition and give the player full control over the battle.
The new weapons include three melee tools at once: a flail that collects ammunition, electric brass knuckles that create lightning chains between enemies, and a massive mace. New firearms have also been added to the arsenal: a double-barreled plasma rifle, a classic shotgun, and a nail gun that allows you to nail demons to walls. A special bonus is the ability to control a giant mech that can also perform Glory Kills.
The game will become more open, with an emphasis on exploration and finding secrets, and the economy will be simplified to one currency - gold. For beginners and veterans, there are advanced difficulty settings: you can change the speed of the game and the aggressiveness of enemies.
DOOM: The Dark Ages comes out on 15 May on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Players who pre-order the game will receive two days of early access.
