Renault has unveiled an upgraded 160bhp E-Tech hybrid unit, now available for the Captur and Symbioz crossovers.

Here's What We Know

Like the previous generation, the new setup combines elements of a series and parallel hybrid scheme. It combines two electric motors - a main motor (36 kW) and a starter generator (15 kW) - with a new 1.8-litre petrol engine producing 80 kW (109 hp). Previously, a 1.6 engine with an output of 69 kW (94 hp) was used.

The internal combustion engine is paired with a new multi-mode transmission. According to Renault, this transmission provides fast and accurate shifts with minimal power loss, is characterised by simplified mechanics and greater reliability. In addition, there is a new selector (e-shifter) with improved ergonomics.

Among the key changes is the switch from distributed to direct fuel injection. Fuel is now injected at a pressure of 350 bar, which improves mixing, increases combustion efficiency and reduces consumption and emissions.

Torque has been increased by 25 per cent to 172 Nm (22 Nm more), and is available from as early as 2000 rpm. This improves acceleration dynamics and acceleration on the move. Thus, Captur accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds (previously 10.6 seconds), and Symbioz - in 9.1 seconds instead of 10.6.

The battery has been increased from 1.2 to 1.4 kWh (230V). This change gave a longer electric drive, especially in urban conditions, and improved the overall efficiency of the system.

Fuel consumption has been reduced to 4.3 litres/100 km (previously 4.7) and CO₂ emissions are from 98 g/km for Symbioz and 99 g/km for Captur. Savings compared to the petrol counterpart are up to 40%.

The towing capacity has been increased from 750kg to 1000kg, making Captur and Symbioz more versatile, e.g. for towing trailers.

Addition to the Symbioz range: the new Mild Hybrid 140

Renault has extended the Symbioz range with two powertrains:

  • 160bhp E-Tech full hybrid.
  • Mild Hybrid 140 - based on a 1.3-litre direct injection turbo engine paired to a six-speed manual transmission. The engine is complemented by a starter generator and a 12-volt lithium-ion battery pack.

The mild hybrid develops 260 Nm at 1,750-3,500 rpm, with fuel consumption claimed at 5.9 litres/100 km.
