To mark the fourth anniversary of Returnal's release, Housemarque has released a free update optimised for PlayStation 5 Pro. Thanks to it, the shooter has received a significant improvement in resolution and smoother operation, which makes the game even more attractive for owners of the new Sony console.

Here's What We Know

Digital Foundry has conducted a detailed analysis of the updated version of Returnal on PS5 Pro and confirmed good results. Previously, the game worked with a basic resolution of 1080p, which was raised to 1440p with the help of temporary reconstruction, and then scaled to 4K using checkerboard rendering.

Now, the updated version uses dynamic scaling with a maximum resolution of 3072×1728 pixels, which is more than 2.5 times the original value.

As a result, the image is much clearer and more detailed. In addition, frame stability has improved significantly: in complex scenes, including boss battles, where there were previously dropouts, Returnal now maintains a stable 60 FPS. Small microstutters sometimes occur when adapting the resolution, but they do not spoil the overall experience of the game.

It's worth noting that the update doesn't add the 120fps mode, which could have unlocked the PS5 Pro's full potential. However, even without it, the patch significantly improves the visual quality and smoothness of the gameplay.

The free Returnal update for PS5 Pro is a great opportunity to return to the sci-fi roguelike project Housemarque or discover it for the first time.
