Russian developers are working on integrating FPV drones into the Katran maritime reconnaissance and strike drone.

Here's What We Know

Russia's Centre for Unmanned Systems and Technologies is developing a complex that will include upgraded 10-inch Skvorets FPV drones. These drones will carry out strike and reconnaissance missions from the Katran naval drone within 5-10 km, with the boat itself acting as a control signal repeater.

"The Katran is designed according to the classical scheme with the possibility of re-equipping it into a trimaran to increase stability. The hull is made of aluminium-magnesium alloy, which reduces weight. In March, one of the pre-production samples was handed over to the Black Sea Fleet for testing.

The development is being carried out with the participation of the Russian Navy Command, and funding may come from government grants. The main problem of the project is the communication system: due to the lack of access to Starlink, Russian drones are forced to rely on radio communication and repeaters.

At the same time, Ukraine is already working to integrate maritime drones into its coastal defence system. According to SBU Brigadier General Ivan Lukashevych "Hunter", the latest surface platforms are capable of patrolling the Black Sea in a five-point storm, have a range of up to 1,700 km and are armed with machine guns. Together with aerial drones, they search, reconnoiter and destroy enemy naval systems.
