Volvo Cars has announced the new XC70. The new model is claimed to be the company's first extended-range plug-in hybrid. Initially, the model is created with an eye on the Chinese market, but in the future it may appear in other countries.

Here's What We Know

XC70 - this was the name of the off-road version of the Volvo V70 station wagon, which entered the market in early 2000. It was produced until 2016, after which it gave way to the Volvo V90 Cross Country.

The new Volvo XC70, judging by the first teaser photos from the manufacturer, is a crossover with design elements from other models of the brand. Unification with the electric EX90 and XC90 with internal combustion engine is noticeable: front headlights in the trademark "Thor's hammer" style and a large grille at the front with active flaps. Meanwhile, the C-shaped taillights are visually integrated right into the glass of the fifth door.

Volvo calls the XC70 its first extended-range hybrid, although it's far from the first PHEV in the brand's history. There are no details on the powertrain yet, but it's claimed that the XC70 will be able to travel up to 200 kilometres on electric power alone - though that's on the gentle Chinese CLTC cycle. In real conditions, the figures will be more modest.

It is also known that the new XC70 is built on the Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform, which Volvo claims supports fast charging features.

The Swedish carmaker promises to reveal more technical and commercial details about the XC70 in the coming months.
