CD Projekt Red has relied on a real physical cartridge for Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo Switch 2, abandoning the game-key card format popular among other publishers. The developers are convinced that the classic cartridge edition will provide players with the best experience on the new Nintendo portable console.

Here's What We Know

Unlike many other third-party studios that choose to release Switch 2 cards with a download code without embedded game data, CD Projekt Red decided to release Cyberpunk 2077 as a full 64 GB cartridge. It will contain both the game and the Phantom Liberty expansion pack, so no additional files will need to be downloaded.

According to Jan Rosner, Vice President of Business Development at CDPR, physical copies remain important to Nintendo's audience, as many players appreciate the ability to plug and play without any hassle. He emphasised that although digital sales are growing, traditional retail sales are not going to disappear anytime soon, especially in the Nintendo market.

Don't underestimate physical editions

Technically, Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 is stable: in portable mode, the game supports 720p and 30 frames per second, and when connected to the dock, it supports 1080p and up to 40 FPS. The developers have also integrated support for a gyroscope, touch screen, mouse function, and the ability to customise the controls.

According to reports, about 65% of third-party game sales on Switch are physical copies, which confirms the importance of this format for the platform. CDPR advises other studios not to underestimate the value of physical editions, especially for Nintendo gamers who appreciate a quality physical product.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will officially launch on 5 June 2025 for prices starting at $450 USD, and Cyberpunk 2077 will be one of the main releases at the launch of the new console.
