An F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet crashed into the water after landing on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea due to a brake system failure.

Here's What We Know

The aircraft was unable to stop on the deck and slid off it. Both pilots ejected in time and were rescued by an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter. Their lives are not in danger.

This is the second non-combat loss of a Super Hornet fighter jet from the USS Harry S. Truman carrier group in the current deployment to the Red Sea, and the third overall.

The previous incident occurred on 28 April, when another F/A-18E Super Hornet, along with a towing tractor, fell into the sea while being moved on deck. One of the sailors was slightly injured. The lost aircraft was assigned to the 136th Attack Fighter Squadron.

The USS Harry S. Truman is participating in Operation Prosperity Guardian in the Red Sea, which aims to protect civilian shipping from Houthi attacks. As part of this mission, the carrier has already suffered losses of deck aircraft.

At the end of 2024, while flying over the Red Sea, the missile cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG-64), part of the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group, accidentally shot down an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet. The downed aircraft was a two-seat version designed for air defence of carrier formations.

In addition, in February, the aircraft carrier collided with the cargo ship Besiktas-M. No crew members were injured in the accident, although the ship's hull was damaged.
