Sweden has signed a $120 million contract with Saab for the supply of Torpedo 47 light torpedoes. Deliveries are due to start in 2026.

Here's What We Know

The Saab Light Torpedo, which the Swedish Armed Forces call Torpedo 47, is Sweden's new light torpedo system aimed at strengthening the defence capabilities of the country's naval forces.

The order includes spare parts, training systems and technical support. The new lightweight torpedo system is designed for use on submarines and surface ships. It is planned to be integrated with helicopters in the future.

This is SLWT's second order from Sweden. The first deliveries to FMV began in 2022.

"We are proud to continue to support Sweden in its efforts to modernise its underwater weapons systems to protect the Baltic Sea region," said Mats Wiksell, Head of Business Area, Saab.

The torpedo has been specially designed for the Baltic Sea with its shallow waters, difficult terrain and seabed. This places high demands on the location and identification of submarines, as well as on navigation and communication using the torpedo.

The torpedo is 2.85 metres long, 40 centimetres in diameter and weighs about 340 kilograms. It can reach speeds of over 40 knots and operate at depths of over 300 metres. The torpedo uses acoustic reflections to detect underwater objects, similar to the way whales navigate in the water.

The torpedo is controlled remotely from a distance of several kilometres using a thin copper wire.
