For the first time in history: during a court hearing, thanks to AI, a crime victim turned to her killer
This week, an event happened in the US that looks both creepy and innovative at the same time: for the first time in history, thanks to artificial intelligence, a murdered man turned on his killer.
Here's What We Know
At a court hearing in Arizona, Christopher Pelkey, who was killed in 2021 by Gabriel Horcasitas during a robbery, was given the floor.
The court allowed Pelkey's sister to recreate an image of Chris using neural networks and gave him his word to address the killer.
A virtual Christopher Pelkey told Horcasitas:
It's unfortunate that we ran into you that day under those circumstances. In another life we probably could have been friends. I believe in forgiveness and in a God who forgives. I have always believed and still do.
The presentation included real videos of Pelka to give those in court a sense of the kind of person he was and how much his virtual image matches the real one.
Judge Todd Lang praised such a creative idea and took the dead man's performance to heart, while Ann A. Ann A. Scott Timmer, Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, expressed her belief that AI will help improve the justice system as well as allow crime victims to present their positions.
In the end, the judge sentenced Horkasitas to ten and a half years in prison for the manslaughter of Pelkey.
