A new modernisation of the T-72A tank was demonstrated at a parade dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in Kazakhstan, but the upgrade raised doubts among military experts.

Here's What We Know

Armour researcher Andriy Tarasenko reported this on his Telegram channel. According to him, the upgrade was probably carried out in a hurry and without proper technical justification.

In particular, the anti-cumulative screens were installed at a height of 25-30 cm above the side, which can prevent the gun from lowering normally to negative angles. In addition, the rear projection of the turret was covered with a grille, and in the front part, under the dynamic protection units, sticks were placed.

It should be noted that the installation of the Kontakt-5 dynamic protection elements on the roof of the turret drew some criticism - due to the large gaps between the containers, the structure resembles a "sieve". This indicates a negligent attitude and generally calls into question the effectiveness of such protection.

Therefore, the modernisation does not meet the current requirements of warfare, especially given the proliferation of drones and precision anti-tank weapons. Earlier, Kazakhstan has already demonstrated updated T-72BA tanks with "anti-drone grills" and improvised means of additional protection, such as bags and boxes mounted on the hull.
