The U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is seeking to integrate small cruise missiles into the MQ-9 Reaper UAVs and the newly adopted OA-1K Skyraider II attack aircraft.

Here's What We Know

This decision was a continuation of cooperation with Leidos, which previously successfully integrated the experimental Black Arrow cruise missile on the AC-130 fire support aircraft. Tests of this system were completed in March 2025, demonstrating high efficiency. The command does not rule out that other aircraft may be armed with the missile in the future.

The approach is based on the strategy of maximising the use of existing platforms and weapons to increase the combat capability of the US Air Force's special operations forces without the need to purchase expensive solutions. Particular attention is paid to countering enemy air defence systems, maintaining a balance between the effectiveness of destruction and economic feasibility.

The development of the Black Arrow began in 2021, and in 2022 an agreement was signed with the US Special Operations Command to conduct joint research and testing. The contract for the development of this missile is valid until the end of 2025.

It is known that the Black Arrow missile visually resembles Lockheed Martin's CMMT (Common Multi-Mission Truck) missiles. However, technical specifications, including range, warhead type and guidance systems, remain classified.
