After the phenomenal success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Illumination and Nintendo are preparing a new animated film, which is likely to be called Super Mario World. The premiere is scheduled for 3 April 2026.

Here's What We Know

The upcoming film became known thanks to the official announcement of Universal Pictures during the NBCUniversal Upfront 2025-2026, where Super Mario World was mentioned among other projects. Although this title has not been officially confirmed yet, it fits the concept of expanding the Mario universe, as discussed by actor Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad. He noted that the sequel will be "bigger in scale" and "expand the universe", which fits perfectly with the idea of a new film with this title.

Nintendo and Illumination have already confirmed that the same key figures are working on the new project as on the first film: producers Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto, directors Aaron Horath and Michael Jelenik, and screenwriter Matthew Vogel. They promise a bright, funny story that will continue the tradition of the first film, which has grossed over $1.3 billion at the global box office.

The new animated film will premiere in the United States on 3 April 2026, with other countries to follow throughout April. The story is expected to once again focus on familiar characters, as well as new locations and adventures that will expand the legendary world of the Mushroom Kingdom.

The first Super Mario Bros. Movie became not only the highest-grossing game adaptation in history, but also the third highest-grossing animated film of all time.
