Sony considers PlayStation 5 price hike due to new US tariffs
Sony has officially announced a possible increase in the cost of the PlayStation 5 due to the impact of new duties imposed by the United States. The company's chief financial officer Lin Tao said that the company will have to compensate about 100 billion yen (more than $500 million) in losses due to these tariffs, which may affect the price of the console for consumers.
Here's What We Know
In its latest financial report, Sony CFO Lin Tao explained that the company does not just calculate tariff costs, but takes into account current market conditions and trends. She noted that a possible price increase for the PS5 is one of the options Sony is considering, along with regulating supply volumes.
Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki added that while hardware production can be localised, the PS5 is made up of components that are manufactured in different countries. Therefore, the question of production in the US or other regions remains open and requires careful analysis in light of the current tariff situation.
Already, Sony has raised the price of the digital version of PS5 in Europe by 25%, from €400 to €500, and in the UK to £430. At the same time, the price of the standard version with a disc drive and PS5 Pro remained unchanged. Similar increases were made in Australia and New Zealand. On the other hand, in the US, the price of consoles has not yet changed.
Similar steps have already been taken by competitors: Microsoft has raised prices for the entire Xbox line due to rising tariffs.
Sony has not yet officially announced a price increase in the US, but the situation remains unstable, and the company is closely monitoring developments.
As a reminder, sales of consoles and Sony's own games are falling, but there is more money: the company's total net income increased by 7% to $81.8 billion. Also, two key changes in PlayStation's strategy were revealed after the management update.
