Square Enix shows the first screenshots of Kingdom Hearts 4: will Mickey Mouse become a playable character?
After a three-year hiatus, Square Enix has finally shared new screenshots of Kingdom Hearts 4, giving fans a first look at the long-awaited game. The footage shows Sora in action in the metropolis of Quadratum and also hints at the possible appearance of Mickey Mouse as a playable character.
Here's What We Know
The last time Kingdom Hearts 4 was shown was back in 2022 during the series' 20th anniversary celebration, which featured the return of Sora and the large-scale world of Quadratum, a modern city with realistic graphics. Now, after the cancellation of the Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link mobile game, Square Enix has decided to please fans with fresh screenshots from the game.
In a new post on the official accounts, the developers thanked the community for their support and assured that they are actively working on Kingdom Hearts 4, aiming to release a product that will meet the expectations of players. They also asked fans to be patient, promising to share more information in due course.
Among the screenshots, we can see Sora in a fierce battle with several enemies - Hartless - on the rooftops of Quadratum. In addition, detailed character models and shots of the cityscape attracted attention. Particularly intriguing was the shot where Mickey Mouse seems to be balancing on a chandelier, which raised speculation about his role as a playable character - he was previously present in the series, but rarely playable.
Kingdom Hearts 4 has been in development for several years, and although the exact release date has not yet been announced, the game is expected to be a large-scale sequel to the franchise. Last year, director Tetsuya Nomura hinted that this part might be the final one in the series, as he plans to retire.
