The mobile version of Dark and Darker will get a new title in June - Abyss of Dungeons
Publisher Krafton and Bluehole Studios have announced some unexpected news regarding the mobile version of hardcore roguelike game Dark and Darker.
Here's What We Know
The South Korean developers have revealed that Dark and Darker Mobile will be called Abyss of Dungeons as of 11 June. They claim the rebranding will help to better "reflect their vision and concept for the game".
The Abyss of Dungeons label refers to the murky depths that serve as the game's setting, as well as the intense survival battles that define its core gameplay. With this change, we want to reaffirm our commitment to providing adventurers with a more nuanced and immersive gameplay experience.
However, there is speculation that the real reason for the name change is the legal battle between Krafton and Nexon. To recap, in 2023, South Korean company Nexon sued Ironmace, the studio behind the Dark and Darker franchise, accusing its employees of stealing the material that formed the basis of Dark and Darker. The court ruled that Ironmace did not violate Nexon's copyright, but the studio was nevertheless ordered to pay a fine of about $5.9 million for trade secret infringement.
Krafton doesn't confirm that the renaming of Dark and Darker Mobile has anything to do with the conflict with Nexon, but there's probably some truth to that suggestion.
Dark and Darker Mobil is not yet available globally, but a worldwide release is expected soon.
