The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 has finally revealed its final pre-launch cards, but one important detail may upset some players - the new console will not support variable refresh rate (VRR) in the dock at least at launch.

Here's What We Know

Experts from Digital Foundry have released the final analysis of Switch 2 specifications, including more information about the custom Nvidia processor and the amount of resources available to developers to create games for the new platform. Among other things, the analysis confirmed that VRR will be supported only in portable mode and not when connected to a TV.

The issue of VRR support was one of the main intrigues around Switch 2. Initially, Nintendo claimed that VRR was available in docked mode when using a compatible display. However, as Digital Foundry noticed, VRR was later disappeared from the official Nintendo website, which created uncertainty about this feature.

Variable refresh rate is a standard introduced with HDMI 2.1 that allows devices to synchronise their refresh rate with supported displays to avoid image tearing at unstable frame rates. VRR has been supported on Xbox for a long time, and the PS5 has been adding the feature more than a year after its release.

Given that the Switch 2 was originally announced with VRR support in docked mode, it's likely that this feature will be added later, possibly with a future update. However, at the time of the console's launch on 5 June, owners of VRR-compatible TVs will have to do without this technology.
