The release of Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition by NetherRealm Studios seems to finally signal the end of support for the fighting game, which has been on the market for about 20 months after its release. The reaction of fans is mixed, especially considering the promises of creator Ed Boon regarding long-term support. However, this ending already raises an interesting question: what's next?

Here's What We Know

Despite the fact that in 2024, WB Games has clearly stated its focus on such flagship franchises as Mortal Kombat, it seems that the next game from NetherRealm may be a completely different familiar universe - Injustice.

MultiverSusie, an insider known for his accurate leaks about MultiVersus even before the game's closure was announced, intrigued fans with a tweet: "The closure of MultiVersus is an injustice, and the repeat of it is another injustice. Leaving me without any leaks is a third injustice." Later, another concise tweet appeared: "3." Putting it all together, the hint of a new Injustice instalment looks pretty clear.

Of course, this is far from an official confirmation, and NetherRealm has not yet announced plans to return to the DC universe fighting game. Nevertheless, given the success of Injustice 2, which was released in 2017 and received critical acclaim and commercial success, the release of a sequel would not be a sensation.
