Bungie puts everything on the line: to succeed, Marathon must hit the top 5 sales of the year
After a less than warm reception during last month's announcement and the scandal of stolen artwork, Bungie's Marathon development team has been under considerable pressure. According to Forbes journalist Paul Tassi, the studio seems to be experiencing a "free fall in morale" and the marketing strategy has been completely revised, including the cancellation of the trailer planned for June.
Here's What We Know
Instead, the team is allegedly preparing a "public testing roadmap" instead of an open beta. Concerns are growing within the company, as the potential failure of Marathon could hurt Bungie's future. The reason is high internal expectations. According to Tassi, the game will be recognised as a success only if it reaches the top 5 sales for the year according to NPD.
For comparison: Monster Hunter Wilds has already passed the 10 million copies sold mark, Assassin's Creed Shadows has gathered more than 3 million players in a week, and the remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - more than 4 million in four days.
Where To Play
Marathon is scheduled for release on 23 September for Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC.
