MediaTek is preparing a breakthrough: the company has confirmed the development of a 2-nm chip that can outperform Apple
MediaTek has officially confirmed that it is working on an advanced 2-nm chip that will be ready for the tape-out phase in September 2025. The Taiwanese manufacturer announced this during its presentation at Computex 2025.
Here's What We Know
This step could make MediaTek the first smartphone processor manufacturer to use the 2-nm process technology, ahead of even Apple.
Today, most flagship chips are based on the 3nm process, but the industry is already preparing for the next leap forward in energy efficiency and performance. Apple has traditionally been the first to implement the latest technologies from TSMC, but analysts suggest that due to production delays or high costs, the company may remain on the advanced 3nm N3P process in the A20 chip. In this case, MediaTek will have a chance to become the leader of the new stage.
The new chip is expected to be called Dimensity 9600. Although details are not yet disclosed, it will be the flagship of the next generation. It is rumoured to be based on ultra-expensive wafers using TSMC's N2 process, which makes it likely that the price of the new product will rise. Dimensity 9600 could become the most expensive chip in MediaTek's history.
If all goes according to plan, the first devices with MediaTek's 2-nm processor could be available by the end of 2026.
MediaTek recently introduced its flagship Dimensity 9400e processor with support for cameras up to 320 megapixels and high performance
