Fiat has revealed the new Panda 4x4, based on the production Grande Panda. The car is claimed to be a concept study for now, but points to the possibility of a rebirth of the compact four-wheel drive hatchback segment.

Here's What We Know

The first Fiat Panda 4x4 debuted in 1983 and quickly gained a reputation as a reliable, simple yet incredibly passable car. Its small size, easy maintenance and amazing off-road ability made it a true legend, especially in the mountainous regions of Italy.

What does the new Grande Panda 4x4 represent? The concept, although not announced as a production model, looks very close to the production version. An internal combustion engine is responsible for turning the front wheels, while all-wheel drive is realised through the addition of an electric motor on the rear axle. Thus, the new Panda 4x4 does not have a traditional driveshaft and differentials - it is an electrified all-wheel drive, similar to e-AWD systems in other models of the Stellantis Group.

The burgundy body colour is reminiscent of the original dark red hue of the first Panda 4x4. The nostalgic effect is further enhanced by beige decorative elements. The concept also features additional LED headlights on the upper boot and increased ground clearance.

Fiat has not yet officially confirmed the launch of the Grande Panda 4x4 in production, but has not denied it either. The Italian manufacturer talks about the concept as a manifesto of a new vision of sustainable mobility.

Incidentally, electrified all-wheel drive is rumoured to be coming soon to the Dacia Duster.
