Porsche discontinues production of the petrol Boxster and Cayman
Porsche has confirmed to Motor1 journalists that it is ending production of the fourth generation 718 Boxster and Cayman (982 series). The last examples will roll off the assembly line in October 2025. This applies to all markets, not just Europe, where the models were withdrawn from sale last year due to new cybersecurity requirements.
Here's What We Know
Porsche's main factory in Zuffenhausen has been assembling these sports cars since 2016, but from 2022, part of the production has been moved to Osnabrück. Despite the model's sunset, sales rose 15 per cent to 23,670 units in 2024. However, shipments fell 22% in the first quarter of 2025, due to the model's withdrawal from key markets.
There will be no full-fledged replacement with an internal combustion engine - the 718's successors will be electric cars. The all-electric Boxster and Cayman are currently in development and, according to Porsche CEO Oliver Blume, will debut in the "medium term", promising even more dynamics and "pure driving pleasure".
Porsche has previously admitted that it will not be possible to increase the share of electric cars in its sales to 80 per cent by 2030, but has maintained its electrification drive. The company's plans for the coming years are as follows:
- The Cayenne will remain on sale with both petrol and electric versions until the 2030s
- The Panamera will also continue to use petrol engines, including an upgraded Euro 7 compliant 4.0-litre V8
- The first-generation Macan will end its lifecycle in 2026, giving way to an electric second generation. However, Porsche is considering a new petrol-powered crossover that could be out by the end of the decade
In addition, the company does not exclude the appearance of versions with internal combustion engine even among the models that were originally designed as electric cars. In 2023, former CFO Lutz Meschke mentioned that some Porsche EVs could get hybrid or all-petrol versions.
