After being announced last year, Xiaomi has officially unveiled its second mass-produced electric car model and first SUV - the YU7. This model was a continuation of the successful SU7 sedan, which sold out 258 thousand copies in 14 months. Only in April, the company delivered 28 thousand of these cars.

Here's What We Know

The YU7 is a high-performance electric SUV with an emphasis on aerodynamics and premium comfort. It received the signature "shark" front end with headlights in the form of spreading water droplets and the largest among production models one-piece aluminium bonnet. According to Xiaomi, the bodywork has been designed with special attention to airflow, with dozens of ventilation channels, active louvres and optimised discs. All this allowed to achieve an outstanding drag coefficient of 0.245.

The YU7 is close to Tesla Model X in dimensions: the body length is almost 5 metres, and the wheelbase reaches 3 metres. However, the interior design is fundamentally different. The interior is designed in a minimalist style with two screens: a 16.1-inch centre screen and a 43.3-inch wide panoramic display at the base of the windscreen. The latter can act as speedometer, navigator or passenger monitor.

The front seats are upholstered in Nappa leather and offer a massage function, while the rear seats are tilt-adjustable and complemented by individual climate control. Boot space is 678 litres, which can be increased to 1,758 litres when the seats are folded down. There is also a 141-litre boot at the front.

Other features include recessed door handles, panoramic glass roof and two spoilers. Three body colours will be available at the launch, Emerald Green, Titanium Silver and Lava Orange.

Safety and partially automated driving features are provided by a roof-mounted lidar, radars, HD cameras and ultrasonic sensors.

Xiaomi hasn't revealed pricing yet, but company founder Lei Jun previously denied rumours of a starting price of 200,000 yuan. According to him, taking into account the level of equipment YU7 should cost 60-70 thousand yuan ($ 8,300 - $ 9,700) more than the Tesla Model Y, the minimum price of which in China is 263,500 yuan ($ 36,600). The final price is promised to be announced in July.
