Fairphone has announced that the Fairphone 4 smartphone will not receive an update to Android 14 as previously planned. Instead, the device will skip one version of the OS and receive an update directly to Android 15, the release date of which has not yet been confirmed.

Here's What We Know

The manufacturer announced this on its official forum, explaining the decision by limited resources and internal capabilities of the development team. Fairphone has assessed the work required to support Android 14 and decided to focus on the newer version of the OS - Android 15.

The last major update Fairphone 4 received in 2023 was Android 13. With Android 14 expected in the first half of 2025, users will now have to stay on Android 13 for a while longer.

It is worth noting that even without an update to Android 14, Fairphone 4 continues to receive bi-monthly security updates. Official support for the smartphone will end in 2026, but the company is considering extending it for another two years.

As for the Fairphone 5, which is still on sale in some countries for around 499 euros, the update to Android 15 has not yet been released. Fairphone does not specify whether this update will be released simultaneously for both models.

The main feature of Fairphone 4 is its modular design. The user can quickly replace the display, camera modules, battery and other components. All it takes is a simple screwdriver. The heart of the Fairphone 4 is the 8nm Snapdragon 750G mobile processor, complemented by 6-8 GB of RAM. The built-in storage can hold up to 256 GB of data.
