Elon Musk has said that the only way he can step down as CEO of Tesla in the next five years is if he dies. He said this during a speech at the Qatar Economic Forum on Tuesday, responding to a question from journalist Mishal Husain about doubts about his future at the company.

Musk also noted that Tesla's sales slump has already been replaced by a recovery, despite the company's first quarter of 2025 showing the lowest deliveries since the second quarter of 2022.

The journalist highlighted Tesla's weak sales in Europe. Since the beginning of the year, the company's sales in the region have fallen by nearly 40 per cent, and in April the decline was more than 46 per cent. Model Y sales were down 51% in April. Musk responded by saying that all automakers are in decline and Europe is the weakest market for the company. "We're doing well in the rest of the regions," he added.

According to JATO Dynamics, 1,078,521 new cars were registered in 28 countries across Europe in April - 1,399 more than a year earlier in the same period. Registrations rose mainly due to electric vehicles, while internal combustion engine vehicles showed a decline. For the first time, Chinese brand BYD, which makes both hybrids and electric vehicles (BEVs), registered more BEVs in Europe than Tesla.

Tesla does not disclose country-by-country sales figures until after the quarter. The report for the second quarter of 2025 is expected in the first week of July. However, most countries publish registration statistics on a monthly basis, allowing third-party analysts to track sales trends.

Earlier this month, Tesla Chairman Robyn Denholm denied Tesla was looking for a new CEO.
