Apple will allow you to repair your iPad yourself - now tablets in the Self Service Repair programme
Apple has officially added iPad tablets to its Self Service Repair programme. Users will be able to purchase original spare parts and tools to repair their devices directly through the Apple Self Service Repair online store.
Here's What We Know
The programme currently covers iPad Air models with Apple's M2 chip and newer, iPad Pro with M4 processor, iPad mini based on A17 Pro and the basic iPad with A16 chip. In the near future, the most popular components, such as batteries, displays, cameras and USB-C ports, should be available for sale. Although these parts have not yet appeared in the store, Apple has already announced their imminent arrival.
As a reminder, the company has been offering a similar service for iPhone and Mac since 2022. The store allows you not only to buy spare parts but also to rent or buy the necessary tools, as well as use step-by-step repair instructions.
However, there are drawbacks. As iFixit points out in a video with a disassembly of the new models, although the repair has become a little easier, the display is still glued to the case, which complicates the process and increases the risk of damage. In addition, prices for parts are expected to be high - sometimes even more expensive than repairs at an Apple service centre.
Recently, new information has emerged that iPadOS 19 will have a macOS-like menu that will appear at the top of the screen when the iPad is used with the Magic Keyboard. This will bring the user experience much closer to laptops, namely MacBooks.
