Israel used a combat laser air defence system during its operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon. This became known only six months after the end of hostilities.

Here's What We Know

According to the Times of Israel, this is a compact version of the Iron Beam laser system developed by Rafael. A more powerful modification of this system is due to officially enter service with the Israeli Defence Forces later this year.

The system was used against drones launched by Hezbollah militants. The published videos show the moment of combat use: a laser beam burns through the wing of the drone, after which it falls. The unit is placed in a portable container, which is likely to be a command post at the same time.

The decision to develop a compact version was made due to the growing number of drone attacks from Lebanon. According to The Wall Street Journal, Israeli forces have destroyed more than 40 enemy drones using the new laser system. The key advantage of this weapon is its cost-effectiveness: one shot costs only a few thousand dollars, while the Tamir interceptor missile from Iron Dome costs 40-50 thousand dollars.

In short, back in 2022, Israel conducted a series of Iron Beam tests, during which the prototype system successfully destroyed missiles, mines, and drones.
