Stellantis ends SmartCockpit partnership with Amazon, considers move to Android
Automotive group Stellantis and technology giant Amazon have ended their joint work on the SmartCockpit software platform for cars. The project was aimed at integrating vehicles into Amazon's digital ecosystem.
Here's What We Know
The partnership between the companies started in 2022. According to initial plans, Stellantis' proprietary SmartCockpit system was to be based on Amazon's automotive solutions. After more than three and a bit years, the initiative is closing, despite statements from both parties about the intention to continue co-operation in other directions. This was reported by Reuters, citing official confirmations from Amazon and Stellantis.
At the initial stage, the concept of co-operation looked promising. Thanks to Amazon's technological developments, the carmaker planned to create a comprehensive software solution with access to the company's services. The functionality included a voice assistant based on Alexa, integration with the shopping platform and the ability to control smart devices in the house directly from the car - for example, remote switching of lights.
The first Stellantis models with integrated SmartCockpit were planned for release between late 2024 and early 2025. The business model involved the automaker paying for software licences for each vehicle. In turn, Amazon was to pay Stellantis commissions for connecting drivers to its services through in-car systems, including Amazon Music. The processing and storage of user data was planned to be done through Amazon Web Services' cloud platform.
The exact reasons for the partnership breakup remain unknown. Representatives of the companies commented on this event as an opportunity to "focus on solutions that will maximise value for mutual customers and better align with evolving strategic directions". At the same time, the parties emphasised their intention to continue working together on a number of other projects.
Despite the finalisation of SmartCockpit, Stellantis will continue to use Amazon Web Services cloud services. Alexa functionality will also remain available in already released vehicles. According to unnamed sources, the automaker is considering adapting SmartCockpit for an in-car version of Android.
When the partnership was announced, then current Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said the joint development would turn the group's brand cars into "the most attractive and immersive space, even for passengers."
