Volkswagen's famous sausages, for many years a domestic hit at the carmaker, will be available as a ready meal in supermarkets across Germany from mid-June 2025.

Here's What We Know

The history of VW Currywurst dates back to 1973, when the product was first made in the meat department of the Volkswagen factory - exclusively for internal consumption in corporate canteens. Today, these sausages not only remain an integral part of the factory menu in Wolfsburg, but are also sold in selected retail outlets as well as in the stadium of the VfL Wolfsburg football club. Currywurst even has an official number (199 398 500 A) alongside car parts and is now the company's most mass-produced product: in 2024, 8.6 million packs of Currywurst sausages were sold against 5.2 million Volkswagen cars. The new ready-to-eat version, which only requires heating in the microwave, is intended to give a further boost to sales expansion.

The "Currywurst mit Ketchup" packaging contains sliced sausages in a sauce that Volkswagen also produces itself. Dietmar Schulz, chief developer of the revamped Volkswagen Currywurst product, said that the amount of curry is exactly the right amount for such a portion of sausages. No additional ingredients will be required, the dish only needs to be heated in the microwave. The new product will initially go on sale in the northern and eastern regions of Germany through the Edeka and Netto chains, with further distribution nationwide.

The concept of Currywurst as a ready-to-eat meal is not revolutionary. Since 2001, the Lower Saxony manufacturer Meica has been marketing a similar dish to be cooked in the microwave. Other brands have also followed suit. Since 2007, VW sausages have been available at retailers in northern Germany, but so far only in raw form for self-cooking. The cooked version should attract new customers.
