Samsung is at the centre of a patent infringement lawsuit filed in federal court in Texarkana, Texas.

Here's What We Know

The court has ruled in favour of the plaintiff, the Japanese company Maxell (formerly Hitachi Maxell), to which Samsung must pay $117.7 million in compensation.

The lawsuit was filed in September 2023. Maxell accused Samsung of infringing seven of its patents related to unlocking technologies for Galaxy smartphones and tablets, data management, and smart home platforms. The lawsuit includes various Samsung devices, including the SmartThings Station, smartphones, laptops and home appliances, which Maxell believes use its patented technologies without permission.

According to The Korea Herald, Samsung entered into a licence agreement with Maxell back in 2011 for a period of ten years. However, after the licence expired in 2021, Samsung continued to use Maxell's technology without a new agreement. This gave rise to lawsuits in the US, Germany and Japan.

Samsung has the right to appeal the decision to a higher court, and it is expected that the company will take advantage of this opportunity.
