Star Wars has been stagnating for years. Disney is holding on to the old and is often afraid to move forward. And even Mark Hamill, as Luke Skywalker, acknowledges this. The legendary actor has categorically ruled out his return to the world-famous sci-fi franchise, saying that it is time for Star Wars to move on, moving away from outdated characters and focusing on the future.

Here's What We Know

In an interview with ComicBook.com to promote his new film Life of Chuck, 73-year-old Hamill was asked about a possible return as Luke in the upcoming Star Wars film: New Jedi Order, starring Rey. His answer was clear: no chance of a return.

"I'm very grateful to George Lucas for letting me be a part of this back in the day, the humble days when George called Star Wars 'the most expensive low-budget film ever made,'" Hamill said.

"We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and part of pop culture. But I've had my time. I'm grateful for that, but I really think Disney should be focusing on the future and all the new characters."

To be honest, we know almost nothing about the New Jedi Order. In January 2024, speaking to AlloCiné, Ridley told us a little more about her new film: "Once I found out what the story was about and everything, I knew it was something I really wanted to do," she said. "I think it's a really fantastic exploration of the Star Wars world. It's a really cool way to take the story in a slightly different direction."

Mark Hamill first played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars film: Episode IV - A New Hope in 1977.
