Xpeng and Huawei have turned a car windscreen into a giant augmented reality display
China's Xpeng has unveiled a new G7 electric crossover with a projection display called "Light-Chasing Panoramic Display". It is a high-tech AR system with artificial intelligence, created together with Huawei.
Here's What We Know
Instead of the usual information like speed, radio stations or the name of the song playing, the system in the Xpeng G7 uses augmented reality to prompt the navigation system and other useful data. From the driver's perspective, it looks like images right on the road in front of the car.
The AR system covers almost the entire width of the windscreen and is equivalent to an 87-inch screen with a contrast ratio of 1800:1. Judging by the company's photos, augmented reality fits seamlessly into the driving experience.
Of course, projection displays with augmented reality are not a novelty. Several automakers have been offering similar systems for several years. Mercedes-Benz were the first to launch their system in the current S-Class, and it's considered one of the most advanced. But the Xpeng system looks even cooler and will appear in a model more affordable than the S-Class.
In China, the new Xpeng G7 will cost from around 250,000 yuan (about $34,800). Full specifications have not yet been announced, but two battery options are reported. The base version will get a single 292 hp (218 kW) electric motor, which will allow the crossover to accelerate up to 202 km/h.
Externally, the G7 looks a bit like the Kia EV6, only taller. At the front there are sharp LED running lights, and at the back - elegant LED-lights, connected by a light strip across the entire width of the body. The overall design is minimalistic, though not particularly memorable.
