Rumour: Just Cause 5 was still being created, but cancelled in the middle of development
Just Cause 5 is rumoured to have been in mid-development before being cancelled some time ago. This discovery came to light thanks to the LinkedIn page of one of the developers, Sumo Digital, who is believed to have worked with Avalanche Studios on Just Cause 5 at least three years ago.
Here's What We Know
Since the release of Just Cause 4 in 2018, which received a rather lukewarm reception around the world, we haven't seen any new games in this series. In 2023, it became known that Square Enix cancelled the development of Just Cause Mobile, which may have happened a few months after Just Cause 5 also suffered a sad fate.
Just Cause is one of those franchises that may never see the light of day again. A Just Cause film is currently in production, but the gaming side of the series has been sadly abandoned over the past few years. After the massive failure of Just Cause 4, it seems extremely unlikely that it will be revisited in the near future.
MP1st was able to track down the developer's LinkedIn profile, which clearly states that he was the Vehicle Features Team Lead working on Just Cause 5, but there is a note indicating that the project is "now cancelled". This developer worked at Sumo Digital from July 2021 to July 2023, which suggests that the game was cancelled towards the end of this period.
In 2022, Square Enix confirmed in a financial report that a new Just Cause game was coming together, but it seems that within just one year, this project was cancelled.
