The Witcher 4 is becoming console-oriented: CD Projekt RED targets stable 60 frames for PlayStation and Xbox first
Historically, the Polish studio has always focused on the PC versions of its games and then "adjusted" them for consoles. However, experience has shown that this strategy has not always been successful. Just think of the criticism from fans about the "deterioration" of graphics in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt before release, or the well-known problems of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and Xbox One at launch. Now, with The Witcher 4, the studio has changed course: they are focusing primarily on developing the game for consoles.
Here's What We Know
"We want to be more focused on console development first and foremost this time around," Charles Tremblay, the studio's lead code developer, told Digital Foundry.
Tremblay went on to say that the studio will be aiming for 60 frames per second for consoles for the final product, as shown in a recent demo of the game on Unreal Engine 5.
Of course, there will be compromises along the way, but from what the studio says, it doesn't want to go back to 30 frames per second. And it believes that 60 frames per second is a realistic goal for the next title on the base PS5, although it mentions that achieving the same ambition on the less powerful Xbox Series S will be "extremely challenging".
We hope that this new strategy will allow The Witcher 4 to avoid the critical problems of its predecessors and offer a comfortable experience right from the start.
