The long-awaited release of Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox Series X/S has faced serious problems. According to experts from Digital Foundry, the port of the game, which was previously a PlayStation 5 exclusive, is far from perfect and has significant performance and image quality issues.

Here's What We Know

Final Fantasy 16, which was released as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in 2023, is now available on Xbox Series X/S. However, according to a brief analysis by Digital Foundry based on early cutscenes of Final Fantasy 16, the Xbox Series X version is already experiencing performance issues.

"The graphics mode has some strange issues. Firstly, the image is softer and lower resolution on the Series X," the publication said.

A video presented by Digital Foundry shows that one frame from the early part of the game is played in 1440p resolution on the PlayStation 5 version of the game and in 1224p resolution on the Xbox Series X version. "The Xbox version is consistently at a lower resolution," Digital Foundry continues.

"There is a difference in the rendering of the foliage, where on Xbox it looks broken in some trees and bushes, which is very strange."

Digital Foundry went on to highlight that in Performance Mode, which boosts the game's frame rate, Final Fantasy 16 runs at 1080p on PS5, while it runs at 720p on Xbox Series X. The Xbox version also has a lower level of detail compared to the PS5 version. This is a significant difference that may be noticeable to players.

However, the performance mode on PS5 is still unstable, as it was at launch, fluctuating between 45 and 60 FPS. Instead, the Xbox version, with its lower resolution, is locked at 60 FPS during gameplay. Cut scenes on all versions of the game run at 30 FPS.
