It sounds like science fiction, but it's real: American startup Splay has introduced Splay Max - an ultra-portable 35″ monitor that folds down to the size of a book and unfolds into a full-fledged screen with a single movement of the hand.

Here's What We Know

The Splay Max is based on projection technology with Full HD quality and 600 nits of brightness. But the main feature of the device is the fabric screen, which is not only lightweight and compact, but it also does not glare even on a sunny day and emits 70% less harmful blue light - your eyes will say "thank you". And if you fancy a movie, the display easily converts to a projector up to 80″ diagonal, and it's compatible with tripod mounts and can be mounted on a table or wall.

The Splay Max weighs just 1.6kg, runs for up to 5 hours without charging and can connect to a laptop, smartphone or console via USB-C and HDMI. Inside, there are inbuilt speakers and a powerful battery.

The device is already available on Kickstarter with prices starting at $744, with a full release expected in November 2025.

Flashback

A few years ago, developers already offered a similar device, but back then the Splay diagonal was 24″, and the technology was not as refined and had a number of design flaws.
