There is an opinion that electric cars lack "soul". In particular, sound. After all, when you press the throttle, you expect not silence, but a real roar of the engine. And manufacturers are trying to bring back this effect in the world of almost silent EVs. One of the pioneers in this field is Borla, a company known for its exhaust systems. Back in 2022, it introduced the first version of a sound system for electric vehicles, and is now working on the next generation.

Here's What We Know

Borla originally made a sound system for the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It imitated the sound of a real maslcar using an original algorithm. Speed, load, power, revolutions are taken into account - and based on this data, the system imitates the engine sound recorded by several microphones on cars with Borla exhausts.

The speciality is that the user can customise the sound to suit him or her. If you want the car to sound more aggressive, go ahead. If you want something quieter, just turn the knob. And now Borla is preparing an updated system called Active Performance Sound System. It has a much more powerful processor and a new DSP-module (in fact, the heart of digital sound processing), which makes the sound even more realistic.

The new sound can also be controlled from your phone via an app - whether you're sitting in the cabin or standing outside. Borla promises that the functionality will only expand over time, and the system will fit a variety of electric car models, not just Ford.
