The Land Cruiser J250, also known as the Land Cruiser Prado, has been given a new powertrain with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. European sales of the novelty should begin in the coming days, although the first deliveries to customers are not expected until the end of 2025.

Here's What We Know

The first electrified Toyota Land Cruiser combines the existing 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine, an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, a DC-DC converter and an electric motor-generator instead of a conventional starter. The latter receives and feeds electricity (in regenerative mode) into a small lithium-ion battery. Toyota says all components are designed and positioned to withstand harsh conditions, so the vehicle's off-road capabilities are not diminished - including a 700mm ford depth.

This system provides quieter and more responsive diesel engine stopping and starting, as well as smoother and more linear acceleration from the outset. A similar 48-volt hybrid unit has previously appeared on the Toyota Hilux pick-up truck.

The optional 4.3 Ah battery weighs 7.6kg and is located under the boot floor. When fully charged, the electric motor gives at launch an additional 12 kW of power and 65 Nm of torque.

Recall that the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 recently also received a hybrid powertrain, and a full-fledged one at that. This is the most powerful version of the model to date, producing a total of 457bhp and 790Nm.
