Brazilian gamers will have to pay even more, as Sony has suddenly raised the prices of many games on the Brazilian PS Store. This decision outraged local players, and it is not surprising: the increase affected both PlayStation games and third-party titles.

Here's What We Know

Sony cited "difficult market conditions, including exchange rate fluctuations" as the reason for the change. In the case of the recently released Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the price jumped from R$349.90 (~63.80) to R399.90 (~$72.98) just a few days after launch. Many point out that third-party games can be purchased much cheaper on platforms such as Steam. In addition, consoles themselves are also extremely expensive in Brazil.

All this leads to deep dissatisfaction among players. Here's how Sony justified the price change in a translated statement published by GameVicio:

"Sony Interactive Entertainment has updated PlayStation Store content pricing due to challenging market conditions, including exchange rate fluctuations. As a result, there have been price increases for PS Store games and in-app content in Brazil. Pricing decisions vary by region and are based on the current economic environment."

Historically, PlayStation has attracted a global audience to its consoles. But while the PS5 is keeping pace with the PS4 globally, it is lagging behind in Europe, mainly due to high prices across the continent. It looks like a similar scenario could unfold in South America.
