Toyota RAV4 stripped the Tesla Model Y of the title of the world's best-selling car
The Toyota RAV4 crossover has overtaken the Tesla Model Y to become the world's best-selling car in 2024, according to new data from JATO Dynamics automotive analyst Felipe Munoz.
Here's What We Know
Munoz analysed data from national statistical offices, dealer associations, and his own sources in the automotive industry. He calculated that global sales of the Toyota RAV4/Wildlander totalled approximately 1,187,000 units last year and that's up 11 per cent from a year earlier. At the same time, Tesla Model Y sales totalled 1,185,000 units - down 3 per cent from last year's figure. Third place went to the Toyota Corolla Cross/Frontlander with 859,000 units and an impressive 18% increase.

Also interestingly, the Toyota Corolla/Levin Sedan was only in fifth place with 697,000 units and an 11 per cent drop in sales. Although it was the Corolla that remained at the top of the global model rankings for many years.
Another interesting fact is the appearance of the Chinese electric sedan BYD Qin in the Top 10 list. Sales of this model reportedly totalled around 502,000 units (+6%).
Munoz said his figures are based on data from 153 markets, which account for 99% of global new car sales.
