Today, 1 July 2025, Google has begun phasing in new features to its Google Photos service aimed at improving the high dynamic range (HDR) image experience.

Here's What We Know

The following major changes have been made to the app:

  • HDRediting: tools like Magic Eraser and Portrait Light now preserve the full dynamic range of HDR photos - images remain bright and contrasty after editing;
  • introduction of Ultra HDR: there is a new tool with enhanced brightness and contrast settings. The old HDR mode has been renamed "Tone" - it is now responsible for basic light correction;
  • SDR to HDR conversion: ordinary photos can be improved by making them compatible with HDR screens - pictures become brighter and clearer.

The update is already available to a number of users with supported devices and will gradually roll out globally over the coming weeks.
