Microsoft has officially confirmed that the next version of its operating system will not be Windows 12, but Windows 11 25H2. The update is already available to participants of the Windows Insider (Dev Channel) program, and the final release is expected in autumn 2025.

Here's What We Know

The 25H2 update will be based on the same Germanium platform as version 24H2. This means that users will receive it as a so-called enablement package - a small package that enables already built-in features with a single system restart. This approach simplifies installation and makes the upgrade process fast and secure.

The first build of the new version is already available in the Dev Channel under the number 26200.5670. The final release of Windows 11 25H2 is expected in September-October 2025, just in time for the end of official support for Windows 10.

The update will be supported for:

  • 24 months for Home, Pro and Pro for Workstations versions,
  • 36 months for Enterprise and Education.

At this point, Windows 11 25H2 doesn't contain any unique features - all new features will continue to be added via regular monthly updates, and activation will happen gradually as the system becomes ready.

Why it matters

Microsoft is changing its approach to releasing major updates, emphasising improvements to the current version of Windows 11 instead of releasing a brand new Windows 12. This gives more time to refine new features and makes the transition easier for users, especially those still on Windows 10.

The company is focusing on stability, speed, and convenience, putting off sweeping changes until a later date.
