A new leak of the iPhone 17 Air's specifications hints: Apple has decided to overtake Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge in terms of body thickness. And it seems that victory is already in the bag. However, for this, the cameras had to be sacrificed.

What we know

According to the FrontPageTech video, the iPhone 17 Air will be only 5.5 mm thick. For your understanding, the Galaxy S25 Edge has a 5.8 mm body. The difference is tiny - 0.3 mm (three times the thickness of a human hair), but fans of ultra-thin smartphones, if any, are already rubbing their sweaty palms with joy.

It's worth mentioning here that the source has a mixed reputation - sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong. But this time, the information coincides with previous leaks, which mentioned a thickness ranging from 5.44 mm to 5.65 mm. In any case, it looks like the S25 Edge will remain second in the race for the title of "lightest smartphone".

But there is a fly in the ointment. To make the body as thin as possible, Apple has apparently cut back on photo capabilities. The iPhone 17 Air will have only one 48MP main camera, while the Galaxy S25 Edge boasts two sensors: 200 MP main and 12 MP ultra-wide-angle. Apple's priority is obvious - design and dimensions are more important than optics.

Among other characteristics:

  • A19 processor (not Pro),
  • 12 GB of RAM,
  • 6.6-inch display, 120 Hz.
  • As for the battery, Apple has gone for a trick. According to rumours, they will use a battery with a silicon anode, which allows them to squeeze more capacity into a smaller volume. Therefore, the battery life will be almost at the level of the basic iPhone 17, despite the modest size of the case.

But the price bites a bit. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to cost about the same as the iPhone 16 Plus, i.e. $900 before taxes. The official announcement is traditionally in September, along with the entire iPhone 17 line, and we'll see if these millimetres are worth the compromise.

We've already told you that the iPhone 17 Air will be lighter than the Galaxy S25 Edge thanks to a new body and battery. We also discussed how Apple was seriously considering removing the charging connector, but changed its mind at the last minute. And if you're interested in what this ultra-thin new product will look like, we recommend you to check out the article where you can see the iPhone 17 Air mockups in the video. Another important point is that the iPhone 17 Air will have 12 GB of RAM for the first time, more than any iPhone 16 model.
