iOS 26: Apple tests AI chat Support Assistant for automated tech support
Found in the iOS 26 beta code is a mention of the Support Assistant chatbot, a new feature in Apple's Support app that will allow customers to enter a problem they have in chat and get a solution from a generative model. If the bot fails - users will have the option to ask a live counsellor for help.
Here's What We Know
From the code, it appears that the chatbot will use Apple Intelligence technologies, likely integrated with GPT-4o or other partner AI. Within the code are warnings that "incorrect, misleading or offensive responses may be encountered" and that the alternative - a human operator - is always nearby.
Support Assistant is likely to be the first point of contact, handling standard queries like charging, Wi-Fi or settings issues. For more complex cases, there's a transition to a live chat counsellor. What's more, the code hints at a function to upload files - screenshots, PDFs or photos - so the bot can more accurately "support" the user.
Such a move is logical: Apple is moving from tools to services. Integrating AI into tech support can reduce the workload of employees, speed up help and increase customer loyalty. After all, now many people are faced with long-waiting calls and boring menu hierarchies.
Recall, iOS 26 is already known for introducing Apple Intelligence, Liquid Glass, real translation in calls and chats, and now "AI tech assistant" is being added. It's highly likely that Support Assistant will become one of the most convenient chips: replacing long FAQs, answering machines, and waiting on hold.
