Apple is developing seven new chipsets at once
Apple is preparing a major update to the hardware platform of its devices. Mentions of seven new proprietary chips were found in the code of an early build of iOS 18, covering smartphones, laptops, watches and communication modules.
Here's What We Know
Chinese handymen studied the code of the iOS 18 test build and published a video on the Bilibili platform, from which it was learnt that Apple is developing the following chipsets:
- A19 (codename Tilos) - the base chip for the iPhone 17 Air model.
- A19 Pro (Thera) - a more powerful processor for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.
- M5 (Hidra) - a new chip for the MacBook Pro 14".
- M5 Pro (Sotra) - an advanced version for the MacBook Pro 16".
- Bora (T8320) - a chip for Apple Watch Series 11 based on the A18 architecture.
- Proxima - a module that combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in a single chip.
- C2 - the second generation 5G modem that will replace C1 in the iPhone 17e. This is especially important as Apple is looking to move away from Qualcomm modems altogether.
Why it matters
Apple is continuing its drive to maximise autonomy by trying to develop more and more components in-house. This will better optimise devices, improve power efficiency and reduce reliance on third-party suppliers.
The first devices with the new chips are expected to be unveiled this autumn, as part of the release of the iPhone 17, new MacBook Pro and Apple Watch Series 11. Proxima plug-ins and the C2 modem will likely debut in 2026.
